Margin and markup are not the same

Profit is selling price minus cost. Profit margin measures profit as a percentage of selling price. Markup measures profit as a percentage of cost.

Profit = Selling price − Cost

Margin % = Profit ÷ Selling price × 100

Markup % = Profit ÷ Cost × 100

Example

If an item costs 60 and sells for 100, profit is 40, profit margin is 40%, and markup is 66.67%.

Common questions

Can margin be negative?

Yes. If selling price is below cost, profit and margin are negative because the sale produces a loss.

Why can margin or markup be undefined?

Margin requires a non-zero selling price, and markup requires a non-zero cost. Division by zero has no defined percentage result.
